Matcha is a nutrient rich green tea made by grinding up young tea leaves into a powder, and mixing them with hot water1. It originated in Japan, and has been honored in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony for hundreds of years2. With normal tea, the water absorbs some of the nutrients of the leaves, though not all. With matcha, you are drinking the whole leaf, and gaining all of the nutrients.
Here are some reasons why you should start drinking it:
1. It is high in antioxidants
Matcha contains a type of antioxidants called catechins, specifically EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which in certain studies decreased the growth rate of tumors, and had other cancer fighting properties. In fact, matcha has 137 times more antioxidants than regular tea. Many antioxidants can prevent cell damage and chronic diseases.
2. It speeds up metabolism and promotes weight loss
Matcha boosts metabolism and burns fat. One study suggested that it helped burn calories four times faster! It is also nearly calorie free, and does not put stress on the body (it doesn’t raise blood pressure or heartbeat). The American Journal of Clinical Nutritional published a study that found that matcha increases thermogenesis in the body (the rate with which we burn calories) by over 30%.
3. It is rich in chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is a green molecule found in plants. It has numerous benefits for the body, such as:
4. It is easy to prepare
Step 1: Sift 1-2 tsp matcha powder to a bowl using a small sieve.
Step 2: Add 20oz (590ml, 2.5 cups) hot water, that is slightly less than boiling.
Step 3: Whisk quickly is a zigzag motion until mixture is frothy, with a bamboo whisk.
There are also many ways to prepare matcha, such as in lattes, smoothies, and iced beverages.
